Practical TTE Skills for Nurse Anesthetists: Enhancing Clinical Interpretation and Communication

Advancements in intraoperative and perioperative care have positioned point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) as a crucial assessment tool within modern anesthesia practice. The application of transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) and other goal-directed ultrasound techniques not only improves the efficiency of patient physiological assessments but also facilitates effective interdisciplinary communication and decision-making. This lecture introduces practical ultrasound assessment techniques applicable to nurse anesthetists throughout the perioperative period, emphasizing clinical interpretation and real-time responsiveness. Course content will cover simplified cardiac function evaluations, including ventricular systolic function and inferior vena cava (IVC) filling status; pulmonary pathology screening such as pneumothorax, pulmonary edema, and pleural effusion; and gastric content analysis aimed at minimizing aspiration risk. Additionally, the application of the Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma (FAST) exam in hypotensive patients will be discussed. This lecture aims to enhance clinical communication with the surgical team, thereby improving team efficiency and patient safety through skillful ultrasound techniques and image interpretation.
